The US House of Representatives has introduced House Bill 9593 – Keep Food Containers Safe from PFAS Act of 2026, proposing to ban the use of intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food packaging.
The bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit the introduction or delivery of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS into interstate commerce. If enacted, the prohibition will take effect on 01 January 2027.
The legislation defines PFAS as fluorinated organic chemicals containing at least one fully fluorinated methyl or methylene carbon atom, providing a clear scope for regulated substances.
The proposed measure is intended to reduce consumer exposure to PFAS, strengthen food packaging safety, and support the transition toward safer packaging materials across the food industry.
