Chile’s Law No. 21,368 introduces strengthened measures to reduce single-use plastics and regulate plastic bottles, supporting environmental protection and waste reduction goals. Published on 13 August 2021, the law follows a phased implementation schedule, with key obligations now approaching full enforcement.
The primary provisions under Articles 3, 4, and 5 take effect on 13 February 2026 (54 months after publication). These include stricter requirements for food establishments, supermarkets, and beverage retailers regarding single-use plastic restrictions, consumer information, and the promotion of returnable bottles.
From 07 July 2026, related regulations become legally enforceable. Supermarkets must comply with new obligations, including displaying a minimum percentage of returnable beverage bottles. Earlier measures—such as bans on expanded polystyrene and specific returnable bottle requirements—have already been implemented between 2021 and 2026.
The law also introduces clarified exemptions for biodegradable materials and specific event-based scenarios, alongside certification and labelling requirements.
These developments mark a significant step in Chile’s transition toward sustainable packaging and circular economy compliance.
