July 2026Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment has announced amendments to the Restriction on the Import of Mercury-containing Products, effective 01 July 2026.
The revised rules ban the import of several mercury-containing products, including switches, relays, certain lamps, and measuring instruments. Additional product categories will be restricted in phases, with further bans taking effect on 01 January 2027 and 01 January 2028.
Exemptions may be granted for essential public or military use, research, education, calibration, or cases where no suitable mercury-free alternative is available, subject to approval.
The regulation is issued under Article 21 of the Waste Disposal Act and supports Taiwan’s efforts to reduce mercury use, protect public health, and strengthen environmental safety compliance.
