At the March 2026 SCoPAFF meeting, concerns were raised over proposed EU pesticide regulations, with PAN Europe highlighting potential risks to human health and environmental protection.
A key issue is the proposal to make unlimited approval of pesticide active substances the default, potentially impacting 49 substances by 2027. A legal opinion warns this approach may weaken EU safety standards and conflict with existing laws.
Additional concerns include unclear definitions of biocontrol substances, gaps in pesticide residue rules for imported food, and ongoing risks from hazardous substances. EFSA identified cinmethylin as an endocrine disruptor, while halosulfuron-methyl is classified as toxic for reproduction.
Environmental risks are also highlighted, including groundwater contamination from PFAS-related substances like penoxsulam and diflufenican, and toxicity concerns linked to triclopyr and mecoprop-p.
These developments signal increasing scrutiny of EU pesticide approvals and the need for stronger regulatory safeguards.
